Hmmm..."Yuu Yuu Hakusho"/"Poltergeist Report"/any other name you know it
as. (Poltergeist is a German-oriented word meaning noisy spirits or
something like that.) At first, this was a hard anime to review. Why?
On one side of the coin, the good side of the coin, this was the #2
teenage shnen series in the early 90's. Of course, #1 was "Dragonball Z".
This is also the anime which Ougata Megumi-san made her anime debut,
playing as Kurama, after doing stage work for a while. You had decent
art, a great bunch of seiyuu, nice audio and the series as a whole was
decent. Action, comedy, romance, yeah, the series was rolling.
On the other side of the coin, you have the horrible dub. Funimation did
that bad of a job dubbing this series. Wrong actors were hired, music
wasn't kept, they even changed the dialogue in a bad way. Many times in
the original, you hear the guys use profanity, but in the dub, the use
of profanity is cut in half. Yeah, I know it's not good to have a lot of
cussing, but cussing does put feeling in a series. Simply put, the dub
is a hacked and slashed version of the orignal.
I better give information before I forget later on. "Yuu Yuu Hakusho" (I
bet I'm going to be wrong here) is based on a 1991 Togashi Yoshihiro
manga. The anime came out a year later and if I recall, Pierrot was the
studio. There are 112 episodes, a couple of OVA's and a couple of movies
total.
Urameshi Yuusuke is a tough acting 14-year old guy. One day, he does a
good act and it costs him his life. Not all is lost as somehow, he
becomes a spirit detective as translators would say. Now tracking down
the bad spirits, Yuusuke is joined by his rival Kuwabara Kazuma, that big,
cat loving goof, Kurama/Youko, the trouble making fox spirit that is
also in the form of a wise bishnen and Hiei, who can really dash his way
towards victory with the help of his sword.
Hmmm. As far as I know, the manga is more serious than the anime. I'm
still trying to figure out why that's the case.
Fun - 3
After saying what I will say in the end, it's no wonder why this
category has a low score. Well, if there is a general flaw, it's that
112 episodes is a bit too much. That's it.
Life - 3
The dub lowers the value of the series severely. If the dub was improved,
then it would score higher.
Story - 6
This is where the series drops and never comes back up. I like the story,
but with some changes (i.e. calling most creatures demons, when in
reality, spirits is the better translation) from Funi in the dub, the
score drops for a good amount of points.
Audio - 3
Original: nice music, nice group of actors, this version made the series
shine.
Dub: the original music is not kept, bad group of actors, the dub is
that bad in terms of audio.
Not enough for you? Whoever played as Hiei in the dub, I'm sorry, but
you're no Hiyama Nobuyuki-san. Nobuyuki-san played as Hiei and he played
as him real well. Okay, I admit that Yuusuke's actor in the dub was as
better than I thought, though he's no Sasaki Nozomu-san, but overall,
the dub is that bad. At least it's better than "Dragonball's" or "Dragonball
Z's" dub, but not by much.
Art - 7
True, I have seen better art in the early 1990's. Still, I like the art
I see in front of me. Oh and yes, Kurama is a guy, not a girl.
Overall - 5
If you have watched the fan subs, I'd say that you're lucky. If you
haven't, think twice before you decide on getting the series. There are some good moments, but the length and translation executions do hurt the series.

Nice action, nice group of characters, do whatever it takes to watch the

Obviously, the dub kills the series and its value. Besides that, the
series can be a wee bit too long.
