This is your typical Japanese monster movie. If you walk into the theatre expecting to see a deep and gut wrenching plot, a special effects festival, and heart pumping action scenes between two nasty, super powerful monsters; you're in the wrong theatre. Tristar's Godzilla was a special effects splendor, and had a shallow plot, but it had a lot of action. Everybody expected it to be a hit, till they realized that Tristar's Godzilla, was not Godzilla. Godzilla as we all know to love, had to have Godzilla in a fat and plump rubber-like suit of cheesy proportions, a irritatingly stupid plot (but somewhat morally valuable), Japanese people screaming mellow dramatic lines, lots of city destruction, maybe another person in a rubber suit to fight, and of course; Godzilla's "death ray". If you were expecting these things in Godzilla 2000, let me give you a gold star.
Godzilla 2000 was created after the embarassing demise of Tristar's Godzilla. In Japan, Godzilla (literally translated to King of the Lizards or Monsters) is a defender of justice, although he trashes Japan quite frequently. No one really knows his gender, and there unlimited theories of where the real Godzilla came from; from burning volcanos, to outer space, to mutation by nuclear weapons testing, the latter seems to be the truest. But from what is the question. Anyways, Godzilla has evolved to a cult-like obsession as thousands or perhaps millions watch Godzilla movies from time to time. No matter how cheesy they are. There's an actual hobby to make monster suits from scratch, and in surprise they look pretty good. The Japanese people love their lizard, and it seems that many westerners learned to love the mellow drama of the cute little mutant; if you ever thought a 400 foot death beam destructive beast was cute. So after the western adaptation, the original creators decided to start on the Godzilla saga again just to show who was the original Godzilla.
Dubbed Godzilla 2000, it's really called; Godzilla VS. Orga. Taking place in some modern year, there is a Godzilla Prediction Group which monitors and attempts to predict what Godzilla is going to do next. This sounds alright and everything as most people would expect a huge government funded organization dedicated 24/7 to stopping Godzilla; not so. Instead it's a puny group of Japanese folk who look like they do Godzilla monitoring on their spare time. Consisting of one to two people per station, an IMac and a bunch of computer monitors lying around to make them look official. The great thing is that the story focuses a lot on a two person prediction team; a father and a daughter who is easily only 7 to 8 years old. Troddling along is an ambitious (always) Japanese (very cute) reporter who wants to get the scoop on Godzilla, but later on in the story learns how to be a "real person". Go figure. Of course, what good is a cheesy story if you don't have a villian who barely says anything but attempts to intimidates the protaganist. Forgetting what his name is, he's a scientist who used to work with the father of the daughter (who's name I also forget) who is now the leader of another Godzilla group basically called Crisis Control Institute. His job is to mock the other characters as much as possible, give Godzilla a bad time, and just look cool but also stupid at the same time. Then there's the squeaky Japanese support characters who do nothing but spit your typical laughable lines, and the Japanese populace that runs in fear.
After you stop laughing at the characters, you can finally look at the main plot. The CCI basically finds a meteorite which they hope to obtain to use a source of energy. Knowing that the meteorite could perhaps hold alien technology, they snab it as soon as they find out about it. During recovery operation of bringing the meteorite out of the sea, it automatically lifts itself out of the sea and stands itself upright. Baffling CCI and the audience, Godzilla is still trampling through the hearts of Japan with no one really to stop him. Jumping along, the CCI and the Godzilla Prediction group discover that the meteorite is an alien ship; like you didn't see that coming. Of course Godzilla and the ship go at it with death beams flying, while the Japan populace is gawking at the destruction. I would tell you more about what happens in the plot; but then again, it would definitely ruin the plot. Seriously.
Godzilla 2000 is a comedy. Whether it'd be intentional or unintentional, it is still incredibly hilarious as the characters spit out their dialogue, and as you watch the action between the model buildings and monster wrestling. In fact, the movie is SO stupid, that you can not be convinced the stupidity of the film isn't intentional. Even though there are CG sequences (which aren't done that well), you know that 90% of the film is done in such a way which captures the old school Godzilla, and breathes life into cheesy monster flicks. If you want to return to Godzilla via the Japanese way, Godzilla 2000 is your way to go. And Godzilla 2000 is not the last Godzilla movie to come out of the Japanese geniuses, there's another movie coming out at the end of this year or the next.
And oh yeah, the dubbing is bad which is good.
