The King of Fighter's series by SNK had its history all the way back to 1994 when the first kof 94 came out. After kof 94, there were 95, 96, 97 and now 98 is the most recent installment. Most people should be familiar with KOF 98 since it was the best KOF and was released in the arcades for almost a whole year. The psx version was release a couple weeks ago and I would say that this is probably the best kof translation from the arcade to the psx. The loading speed is fast and it is almost a 100% port.
In the previous kof's, the story was linked to Orochi, an ancient God who is out to destroy humans. He was sealed off in KOF 97, so KOF 98 is left with a weak plot. The title is called KOF 98 the slugfest, which kinda implies that it is a pure fighting game with no story. The basic storyline behind the game is that Omega Rugal was revived and the fighters have to defeat him to prevent him from taking over the world.
KOF 98 features the most players to choose from comparing to any other fighting games out. There are a total of 38 players. There are different versions of some of the players which can be chosen and those have their own set of moves and combos which makes the total characters 50 in the arcades and since you can use the last boss in the psx version, it would make 51 playable characters all together.
In my opinion, the KOF series is probably one of the most successful fighting games out. With the option to fight 3 on 3, there can be a maximum of 5 rounds per battle. Overall I would say that KOF 98 is the best of the KOF series and is definitely worth getting :)
graphics: 7/10
The graphics are not amazing in this game, cause it is not set in a 3D environment as in capcom's power stone or taito's psychic force 2012. However the moves are realistic and the characters design are done quite well
Gameplay: 7/10
The KOF series has the best sets of combos and move that are easy to execute and visually satisfying :) Most of the combos are done easily and most of the characters are easy to master and have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages, which makes most of the characters an individual and not clones of each other.
Over all: 7/10
Overall, the king of fighters 98 is a great 2d fighting game. Although not as visually astonishing as the fighitng games that utilizes the 3D engine, it is still one of the most popular and widely played game in the world :) With the psx port being such a good translation of the game, I would go get a copy asap :)
