People who are familiar with SNK games should be familiar with the King of Fighters Series. SNK has made a lot of fighting game in the past, such as Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury. Their biggest rivals being capcom who made the Street Fighter series. The king of fighters series began with The King of Fighters '94 and on July 31, 1998, The King of Figher's '98 was released for the arcades.

Since KOF' 94, the story revolved around a God who wants to destroy human kind. His name was Orochi. 1000 years ago, Orochi was sealed by the Kusanagi family and the Yagami family. But now, Orochi's power has awaken and is looking for the perfect oppurnity to strike again. The main character of The KOF series is Kyo, descendant from the Kusanagi family, and his biggest rival being Iori, descendant from the Yagami family. Every year, there is a KOF contest held by the people who tries to revive Orochi to look for the eight people with the power of Orochi.

King Of Fighter's '97 is the final installment of the Orochi series in the sense that Orochi is sealed away again in the end of the game. The king of fighters 97 is quite different from the rest of the king of fighers. You can now choose from playing in advance mode or expert mode. Expert mode is the mode all other kof games are in, you must press down the three buttons to collect energy to execute the super moves. No super super can be done unless your character is in read health. Characters in expert mode cannot do rolls, but instead they dodge moves by moving aside.

The advance mode features the collection of power levels with the progress of the game. The maximum level in the advance mode is 3. The characters can execute their super super moves by using up one level to powerup and then use the other gem to execute the move. Also, in advance mode, there are attitude values. Certain characters like Iori Yagami will hate everyone and when he loses, he will not leave any power gems for the next person in the team.

The gameplay is quite simple and most moves are done similiar to the street fighter moves. fireball, uppercut etc.

Here are the ratings i give to this game:

Gameplay: 9/10

A superb fighting game, I really love the way you can use three person on the team to maximize the rounds to up to 5 per battle. Also It is cool, how you could beat three people using a single team member. The super moves are easy to execute and most of them are cool.

Story: 7/10

This is a fighitng game where there is actually connection between each game. the story of kof 94 eventually develops to the story of kof 97. So I can say this is a fighitng game that deserves a good rating storywise.

Graphics: 7/10

Although done in 2D graphics, the backgrounds are detailed, as well as the movement of the characters. Most of the design of the characters are cool. This is a fighting game that is set in the present, so there are a lot of teenage type fighters in the game, which attracts more players from that age group. My favorite character is of course Iori Yagami.

Music: 7/10

Not quite sure about the music, since I don't usually listen to music when I play fighting games, but there is a soundtrack available for this game so I guess it must be pretty good. In some stages you could hear Athena singing. Haven't heard the whole song though, maybe its in the soundtrack.

Overall: 7.5/10

KOF 97 is a great game, although the load time in the psx version does not compare to the arcade version. It is still worth buying just so that you could get that constant dose of fighting. I would recommend this game for anyone who likes fighitng games, or just for anyone who wants to start on a fighitng game.
