Beside the Macross Do you Remember Love game released for the Saturn, another Macross game was released earlier for the PSX. This game unlike Macross DYRL is a flight simulator instead of a 2D shooter and does not make use of the original Macross story at all. Instead it is a brand new story. Although they story is not great, but Bandai introduced a new singer group in Macross called The Milky Dolls. A lot of famous voice actresses did these 5 singers voice, including the voice actress for Belldandy, Sailor Moon, Sharon Apple and the other two I forgot. (If anyone can help with this one, it would be appreciated.) The game itself is just like any other flight simulator games, but it has the transformation scenes in polygon.
The gameplay itself is kinda bad, the enemies are really easy, and it is very hard to lose in this game. Crashing to the ground in fighter mode does not do any damage to the valkeryie, kinda strange. The only reason that I played thru the game is because I want to hear the two songs sang by the Milky Dolls. Very good songs but of course playing thru the game to hear it is not really worth it. The game itself is not that good and the so call FMV scenes are nothing more than still pictures talking. If you want to hear the songs, go buy the soundtrack, but the game is only good playing thru it once.
Here are the ratings I give to this game:
Gameplay: 6/10 The gameplay is a flight simulator but it has many flaws and it is very easy to pass, so as a flight sim, it sucks.
Music: 6/10 The songs are good, but there are only two of them, the background music thru the game is very repetitive and sounds like bad midi. So I cannot give this game a very high rating music wise.
Story: 5/10 Totally lame story, it seems like the main objective is to save the milky dolls from the zentradi. and after saving the girls, they talk to you once in a still picture conversation.
Graphics: 5/10 They could have done a lot better with the landscape and the cut scenes, so the graphics is bad. I think it is bad for the time Bandai made us wait for the release of this game. They postponed it more than twice.
Overall: 5.5/10 Being a Macross game, it has a lot of appeal, but don't let the licsence fool you, the game is not as good as it could be. Counting the amount of time they spent making this game, I would say it is a failure. Only get this game if there is no other way to get the soundtrack or you just have to buy it try it out and laugh at it.
The game Macross Digital VFX is created by Bandai and all rights are reserved to that company.
