Gundam fans should know that there have been a lot of Gundam games released in the past. They are all released by Bandai, but none of them in my opinion is very good. Most of them are just side scrolling shooters with bad graphics because they were made for the 16 bit systems. I think that Bandai is better at making models, and anime than games, but their recent releases of Gundam Z for the Saturn and the PSX is really good. Gundam The Battle Master is a 2D fighting game which features huge mecha fighting each other. Most of the Gundams from the original universe is there. There are no Gundam Wings or Xs. The Gundams include Gundam RX-78, Nu Gundam, Sazabi, ZZ-Gundam, phyco Gundam Mk-II, and a few more from different series. But the graphics of this game is amazing, the robots take up the whole screen and some even take up two screens.
Bandai animated this game using sementations instead of frames which solved the RAM problem for the PSX. If Bandai did this game by frames, it would not run probably. There isn't much a story line to this story except choosing a robot and taking it to battle against other Robots. The last robot being The physco Gundam MK-II. Because Bandai created this game with Robots, so the movements of the robots are rather slow. The option of thrusters also add to the game. Because the game is so slow, one cannot possibly think of doing any combos as in Street Fighter or any other 2D fighting in the arcades. The player has four option of attacking, punch, kick, sword weapon, and long range weapons. It is a pretty cool game with good graphics. For Gundam fans, this is a definite buy, but for people who haven't heard of Gundam or people looking for fast paced and comboed 2D fighting, this would not be the game for you.
Gameplay: 8/10 The game is a slow 2D fighting game, but being able to control a robot in realistic movements fighting each other is pretty cool.
Music: 7/10 The music is kinda blend and is in the background most of the time, the fighting sounds usually covers up the music anyways. I cannot give a really accurate rating to the music element of the game.
Story: 5/10 The story is really non-existence, except the part in the intro where it says that the Earth is filled with bandits and Bounty hunters are set out to capture them, that's basically it.
Graphics: 9/10 The graphics of this game is amazing, the mechas are really detailed and because of the segementation method, it runs smoothly. This game features one of the most detailed Gundams on computer graphics.
Overall: 7.25/10 The game is pretty good graphic wise and it is pretty fun if you are into Gundams. But otherwise I would not recommend much to non fans or people who like fast paced action.
