Type: FTG
Platform: PSX
Company: Capcom
Release date: 1998

As most of you should know, Capcom is the company that created many great series of games such as Rockman (megaman in US), the Breath of Fire series, the Resident Evil series (bio hazard in Japan) and of course the infamous Street Fighter series. There has been a lot (I mean a lot) of Street fighter games released, starting from street fighter 1 and going all the way to Street Fighter Alpha 3, released not long ago.

In between all these great street fighter games, capcom has released a puzzle game similiar to tetris and they called it puzzle fighter. It features little tiny SD street fighter characters on screen and the players play a puzzle game simliar to tetris to win. Apparantely, people liked the idea of SD street fighter so much that capcom acutally released a SD street fighter called Pocket fighter (Gem fighter in Japan). This game features characters from Street fighter and Night Warriors. The ususable characters include Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Dan, Ibuki, Chun Li, Tasaba, Felicia, Morrigan, Sakura, Zangief, and Lei Lei.

This game is very cute in the sense that the SD character animation is funny and the attacks are halirous. While using combos, characters will change form to attack the enemy. Chun Li while attacking will change into Jill (resident Evil) and she will be firing guns and rockets at enemies. Felicia will change into megaman and she will fire her buster cannon and so on.

While attacking or being attacked, gems of different colors will fly from the one being hit. These gems will allow the characters to increase in their attacking abilities. Chun Li's fireball will be a lot larger once her fireball gem level reached level 3 and so on.

Here are the ratings I give to this game:

gameplay: 8/10

Thiis game is very well done in terms of gameplay. Although being a fighting game, it has a special mode where you can create a character that matches your personality and the computer will use him/her to fight and when you win, you get items to upgrade the character. It is also very cute to see the moves.

Graphics: 7/10

Standard Japanese SD type character, they are cute and fun to watch. The 2D anamation is very smooth and the characters are drawn with great detail. You can even see the characters grinning.

Music: 6/10

The music is not bad, but of course being a fighting game, it does not have too many tracks. Just one track per level. It gets repetative. They add voices in the intro and the ending of each character which is kinda new, cause fighting games don't usually emphasize on endings.

Story: 4/10

It has a better story for each character than most of the other fitghting games. There is an intro bit when you select the character and the ending is funny as well.

Overall: 6.25 /10

I would give this game a higher rating, but since it does not really have a story, the score is significantly lowered. But when looking at the game from a fighting game fan's point of view. It is new and innovative. It deviates from the normal beat them up game with bloody graphics. I would recommend this game for anyone who enjoys a good laugh while fighting :)
