The Rockman series is also known as Megaman in the states. It is one of the longest running series of games made by capcom. It is almost like a trademark. Rockman 1 was made for the NES a long time ago, and then there are 3-4 rockman games made for the SNES as well. And now the rockman series has gone 32 bit. The history of the Rockman series for the PSX started with the port of Rockman X3 from the SNES. There were added anime clips as well as an intro song in the beginning of the game as well as anime scenes of the bosses before each stage...

As most of you should know, the Rockman series and the Rockman X series is completely different, with different characters and a somewhat different character design. Rockman 8 features character from the original series with characters such as Roll, Shadowman and Rockman's evil brother. Although I much prefer the cool armor designs and the character of Zero in the X series, Rockman 8 is still a game that is good and should not be missed.

Instead of computer graphics and futuristic looking backgrounds of the X3 and X4, Rockman 8 uses handdrawn colorful backgrounds that looks somewhat like a talented kidengarden drawing. The story begins with two robots from space battling against each other and crashed on the earth. Rockman was sent to investigate the site of the crash. When he gets there, he found out that Dr. Willy has already gathered his price and left. That's when Rockman was called back to his base by the Doctor for futher instructions.

The gameplay of this game is different from the X series in the sense that the enemy bosses always has the same amount of life as you do, making the battles somewhat more fair. Rockman cannot do any double jumps, dashs or get armor power ups, nor can he scale the walls. The only thing that Rockman can do in this game is a slide. Battling against the bosses is somewhat different too, since using the right weapon against the right bosses will guarantee victory.

The game utilizes a save feature instead of the password featured in X3. Throughout the game, Rockman can gather screws from different parts of the stage to purchase items such as starting the stage with more lives and a more rapid shot and so on. Despite all these quality of the game, I would say that this game is aimed more for a younger age group since the stages are really short and easy to finish, unlike the stages in X3 where they are extremely complicated and long. I recommend this game for people who likes the Rockman series or to kids who enjoy a 2D platform with colorful backgrounds and good animation.

Here are the ratings I give to this game:

gameplay: 7/10

The same old Rockman series type of game. Kill the boss and you get his skill type of game. Although the game is on the easy side, it is still quite fun to play.

Music: 7/10

The music is good, although I cannot exactly say I like the intro song a lot. It has some good tracks, but they are repetitive and gets boring after a while. The sound of Rockman is annoying and above all that, the sound quality is better than the average sound quality for games.

Graphics: 8/10

Not much computer graphics or polygons in this game. Actually I really haven't seen any use of polygons in the game, but maybe I missed it right? :) The handdrawn characters are cute, and the background sceneries are defintely worth mentioning. The animated cut scenes are excellent, so it is like watching an anime.

Story: 8/10

A somewhat different story from the rest of the Rockman series, because in this game, there are robots from space and the crisis was brought to Earth from space rather than the same old, "Ha ha I am Dr. Willy and I create Robots to take over the earth" type of story.

Overall: 7.5/10

I might have given this game a higher rating than it should, but because I am a big fan of the Rockman series, especially the X series, I give it a 7.5/10. But don't get me wrong, this game is still excellent and still should be played by Rockman fans, but non Rockman fans might not want to play this game considering the difficulty and the somewhat childish graphics in the game. I recommend this game for younger kids who enjoy platforms and Rockman fans, but for the rest of you, I would actually recommend playing the X series first before giving this game a shot.
