Hi you all :) It's been quite a while since I last wrote anything for anime densetsu, it is probably because I am super busy with playing games and keeping up with my homework :) Well, enough about me, let's get on with the review.
As many of you know, The VG series was first released for the PC as a hentai game, it has been translated into Chinese and many other platforms has come out with the game before. I have lost track of how many variable geo there are out there, I know there is 2 for the computer and that's about it. It has also been released as anime in the form of OVA, but I haven't seen them yet, guess I will have to get that sometime so I could review those too. Well anyways, enough blabbing, let's get to the game :)
Advance VG 2 for the psx is not a hentai game, I repeat not a hentai game, so if you are expecting a 2D hentai fighing game, then look somewhere else, you won't find any hentai games on the psx. As for gameplay, it is definitely better than the ones released for the PC. There are 10 characters in total including the two hidden ones. I have only accessed the firrst hidden character material and haven't got the last girl yet. But fighting her sure took me a while :) Imagine a super that hits the whole screen, kinda like orochi in KOF 97. The game is divided into a few modes, normal modes allow you to select one character and duke it out with others, story modes involve the actual story of the game, and you will only get to use one character throughout the whole game, and she is Tamao. She is easily the most useless character in the game except for her super which takes half the bar of enemies energy everytime you do it :)
Vs. mode is the same for everything fighting game, duke it out with your friends. Time attack mode, what more can I say about that and practice.
The game does not really stand out amongst other great fighitng games out there today like Capcom games and SNK games, but I have to say that the anime cutscenes are nicely done though.
Here are the ratings I give to this game:
Gameplay: 7/10 -- There are no air combos, no instant kill moves, nor are there any cool friendship combos, but it is passable. In my opinion it is better than Metal and Lace 2.
Music: 7/10 -- I don't really listen to music as I play fighting games, but I do remember vaguely though the cut scenes that the music quality is not bad.
Graphics: 7/10 -- Nothing astonishing, not a game with a lot of eye candies, the background is plain, but the characters are well defined and drawn in anime style.
Story: 7/10 -- The story leaves off where advance VG one finishes, with Yuka being the champion of the contest and not suprisingly a new enemy shows up to take out all the fighters in the tournament. Most of the characters from the first game are here as well.
Overall: 7/10 -- A very average game, I probably wouldn't have gotten it if I didn't know about the history of the series. But heck it kills time :) and I got bored of all those capcom and snk games, so it is a change of scenery for me :) I wouldn't recommend this game for people who don't like fighting games at all. This is not the game to start you off in the genre.
